Double Barrel, Side by Side Flintlock Pistol:
English ca. 1799. 28 bore (14 mm) 0.54 cal. This fine DB flintlock pistol has 9 in., skelp twist, damascus barrels with the top of the central rib bearing the gold-inlaid makers signature: ∙∙BROWN∙LONDON∙∙. This was John "4" Brown, London/GB who worked as a gunmaker between 1798-1804 in London. His working addresses are recorded as 104 Strand (1798-1803), and 1 Little Queen Street, Lincoln's Inn Fields (1804) (1-3). The pistol has an embedded silver foresight and an undermounted ramrod. Roped pattern engraving and two gold-inlaid bands at the breeches. Dentate pattern banding at the back of breech and floral-engraved tang grooved for sighting. Engraved screw heads, case-hardened and floral engraved flintlock mechanisms with legend: BROWN. Sliding safety’s, double triggers, large circular trigger-guard engraved with panoply of arms, gold-lined ship's prow pattern pans and roller frizzens, gold-lined touch holes, vacant shield-shaped silver wrist escutcheon. Checkered walnut stock with mullered borders and blued steel furniture. Original ebony cleaning rod with worm and horn tip. Weight is 1,071 g. Condition: Fine to excellent original condition throughout. Barrels retaining original browned finish mixed with age patina. Bright, shiny bores. Mechanics are crisp, with strong main-spring pressure. Case-hardening retaining slight traces of color. Wood and checkering are in excellent condition with only very light handling wear overall.
