A Fine Cased .450 Caliber Salon Pistol by Gastinne Renette:
French 1888. SN: 3614 A fine, .450 cal center-fire salon/target pistol by Gastinne Renette (1,2). The pistol is fitted with a 10½ in. fluted, octagonal barrel with a bead foresight set into a dovetail slot. The upper flat bearing the signature: Gastinne∙Renette A Paris. French black powder proof marks, signature, No. 3614, assembly number “14”, “450”, and date of 1888 located on the barrel, under the fore-end cap. Overall length 16.75 in. Right side-lever, breakfront action with shell ejector mechanism. Rebounding hammer and percussion fence. Gold plated firing pin. Two-part walnut, root wood stocks; the grip with checkering and engraved pommel cap, the fore-end with engraved barrel bolt, and barrel bolt escutcheons. Charcoal blue, spur trigger guard and iron mounts with foliate scroll engravings. The lock plate with extensive foliate scroll/ rinceaux engravings and repeated signature in an oval field: Gastinne Renette. In original blue velvet lined mahogany case with shield-shaped escutcheon containing accessories, including bullet mould, .450 cal cartridge crimper, cleaning rod and key. One spare, gold plated firing pin and several replacement springs. The inside of the lid with maker’s signature in gold print. Condition: The condition is exceptionally fine, new, and unfired, preserved in its original case. This pistol has literally sat untouched since the day of its manufacture, ex-factory. The barrel retains 100 % of its original bluing. Full color, case hardening on the iron mounts and break-front mechanism. The very fine and petit foliate scroll/ rinceaux engravings are of the highest quality throughout. Fully functional. Bright, shiny bore. Break-front target pistols of this type are extremely rare, and in this condition, double the rarity. With original case and accessories, the rarity is even more so. An exceptional quality set by a much sought after maker. The firm of Gastinne Renette was started in 1812 by Louis Gastinne and Albert Renette.
In 1812, Albert left the old Renette Popincourt district through Paris to settle the Champs Elysees. He joins Louis Gastinne military reform due to many wounds received in the war in the campaigns Napoleon . A good agreement exists between the two men as between the two families. In 1812, the Empire and the wars weigh on ways of living. Moreover, in the groves and the Bois de Boulogne, frequently deals with affairs of honor. The situation therefore favors the manufacturer and arms dealer specialized in dueling pistols. The quality of the weapons offered by Gastinne Renette and provides a great success that will last. For more than a century duelists go once or more in the gunner-arquebusier the roundabout . After the proclamation of the French Empire in December 1852 Gastinne Renette became the official supplier to Napoleon III (Arquebusier de L’Empereur Napoleon III) and the Imperial Court "Gastinne Renette in Paris, Champs-Élysées, Gunner arquebusier of the Emperor, the Prince Imperial, and to the Queen and the King of Spain. " (Arqebusier du roi d’Espagne) On the anniversary of the eight years of the Prince Imperial House carries a child weapon finely ornamented now exhibited in the Paris shop. In 1853 Gastinne Renette patented a system copied by most of the musketeers at the time, and which is at the origin of double-barreled gun.
In 1855, "Mr. Gastinne Renette Gunsmith his Majesty the Emperor, Avenue Montaigne" gets a pass "by order of the Emperor, Mr Gastinne Renette is allowed to enter and exit the palace with weapons." At the World Expo 1855 which is held on the Champs-Elysées, the emperor buys all the exhibits by its Arquebusier. In the year 1855 the First Class Medal is awarded to Mr. Gastinne for the implementation of new processes and the creation of collections that include gun barrels, shotguns, rifles, canardières, pistols, sabers, swords and hunting knives needed for firearms accessories.
