English 1793. Folio (13.5 X 11 X 1.25 in.). Produced “At his Academy for Illustrating and Painting Natural History” No. 10 Great Marlborough Street London 1793. Thomas Martyn (probably 1760-1816) was an English zoologist, conchologist and entomologist.
Gilded page edges. Original artwork throughout. Hand colored engraved frontispiece with a guilt border, 2 engraved titles, 2 engraved plates of coins and 28 hand colored engraved plates of spiders, some heighted with gum Arabic. Tissue faced opposing pages to the artwork, all in fine original condition. Contemporary tree calf, gilt, rebacked. Covers with wide gilt borders.
[Nissen ZBI 2724] (1)
Probably the authoritative work of its time. All illustrated plates of the aranei are hand colored, rendering life-like images, with unexpected 3-D dimensionality. This first edition was limited to an initial printing of ca. 100 copies, making the work extremely rare. Bibliography: 1.
